A year ago, my boyfriend and I went to a wedding together for the first time. The wedding took place in Ohrid, North Macedonia, one of the most beautiful and breathtaking places to get married at. Being Bulgarian, I have heard about the beauty of Lake Ohrid since I was a child, as there are even songs written about it. Ohrid was on my travelling list for a long time so I was super excited about visiting and especially for a wedding ceremony. If you are looking for a small, historic and romantic chapel to get married in, the Church of St John of Kaneo on the rocks overlooking Lake Ohrid is the best place. That is if one or both of you are Orthodox Christian. The other can get christened before the ceremony, as one of our friends did.
Everything was very well organised by our Macedonian friend. We were staying in Prilep, our friend’s hometown and from there we got a bus, which drove us to Ohrid. At the end of September, the weather is still warm enough to wear a nice dress, but not too warm so that your make up starts melting. Thus, it was the perfect weather for a wedding.
When we arrived in Ohrid, we got on boats and we were taken to the shore under the Church St John of Kaneo. Of course, there is a path leading to the church, but it was so much better to go with the boat. Especially for us girls with the high heels.
The Church of St John of Kaneo is situated on a cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid. We arrived at Kaneo Beach and from there we climbed the stairs to the church. The view was impressive. What else do you need when you have the blue lake, the sun, the green trees and the small church. A perfect place for wedding photos! It is believed that the church is built somewhere in the 13th century. The architect is unknown, but they might have been influenced by Armenian churches of that time. The Church of St John of Kaneo is small. I think we were around 40 people inside along with the priest and the photographers. If you want an intimate wedding then this is your wedding venue.
After the ceremony, we took a couple of photographs in front of the church and then we walked to Ohrid. It was like going back in time, walking on the stone streets among the old Renaissance houses. On the way, my boyfriend and I stopped at the yard of another church called St Sophia. I love old, historic buildings so I liked that one as well. Of course, the Church of St John of Kaneo was more beautiful.
If you are flying from Scotland to Skopje there are not direct flights. The most convenient flight is with Turkish Airlines from Edinburgh to Skopje with a stop in Istanbul. If you are planning to fly from Eindhoven Airport there is a direct flight to Skopje with Wizz Air.
Take a look at the picture below and tell me that Ohrid, North Macedonia isn’t the most beautiful place to get married at?
